Description - Oil on panel, mounted in ornate, hand carved, gilt frame. Image size excluding the frame: 22 x 37,5 cm. Signed and dated, lower right hand corner with coat of arms in upper left hand corner. Some minor surface wear. Varnish a little cracke but overall good color integrity. Wear to frame, possibly incomplete.
This piece was once a part of the Cahrl Polowzky Collection formed in the early 1930's. The collection was sadly split up during the final years of World War II, when possibly more than fifteen artworks from the Feline Era fell to the Nazi flames; determined as they were to destroy what they called "entartet kunst", or degenerate art. Somehow this small, but beautiful portrait of the young general Gabriel Kleber, managed to escape the destruction, and ended up in Norway as a part of a private collection. The coat of arms featured on this painting is a variety of the Oromys Order symbol. There are unfortunately no records to reveal what the significance of these diagonal mice (from top left to bottom right), might be. The Oromys brotherhood - also know as The Oromys Order - formed in the late 1500's as a hunting club, but through the 1600's evolved into a gentleman 's club. Very little is known about Gabriel Kleber, except the fact that he was a close friend to the famous Danish/Norwegian hero, (There is some serious controversy connected to the question about his nationality) Capteine Hulge Tordenpote.
