Description - This Acrylic painting was done in the fall of 2008.
My inspiration for this piece was a watercolor painting I saw years ago in an art shop in China Town in San Francisco. I did a quick sketch of the painting in my sketchbook. (As I almost always keep a sketchbook with me to record notes of inspiration or to journal in.) I loved the idea of fall leaves floating on the surface of a koi pond and the colors in the fall leaves mimicking the colors of the koi.
In preparation for this painting I collected some fall leaves and took some pictures of Koi in a pond at a garden park in Los Angeles on a foggy day. The colors were washed out on the pond rocks because of glare off of the water. The subject is the fall leaves, the koi, and muted colors that are created on foggy day. This type of weather makes the koi slow and lethargic.
