Waiting in Line at the Uffizi" ©
2007 by Matthew Bates

Matthew Bates

Matthew Bates comes from an artistic family. His parents are musicians and his father, who is also a painter, helped him develop into a fine artist. The artist went to art school in San Francisco at the Academy of Art College where he honed his skills in drawing, painting and perhaps most importantly, in design. At the age of 20, Matthew Bates moved to Firenze, Italy which became a permanent move in 1992. Firenze has given him the artistic inspiration to create his cityscapes. The quality of Renaissance thought is so pure that it is impossible to not get swept up in it.

''The reason that I paint is to reproduce an idea that I have in my head onto the canvas, and into the real world. This process is one of discovery, as if the image is already there, and I am uncovering it by painting. I paint realist subjects because they are what inspire me. Every Painting is a journey, and I love the ride.''
